01Gen3201 [LLM0211] Jacob Wrestles and is named Israel
Genesis 32
After Jacob had been in the house of Laban, his father-in-law's, for 20 years, he wanted to return to his own country with his wives Rachel and Leah, his womenservants, and all of their children..
and after some time, Jacob took a stone and built a heap and ate, but Laban said that the heap of stones was witness of this pact: Laban said "..the LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another..." Laban said that Jacob should take no more wives, and that they should not cross over the heap of stones to do each other harm.
Then Jacob offered a sacrifice, and they all ate bread and stayed all night at that place. And in the morning Laban kissed his sons and his daughters and blessed them, and went back to his own place.
And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. And when Jacob saw them, he said "This is God's host" and he called that place Mahanaim. And Jacob sent messengers before him to his brother Esau, to tell Esau that Jacob was coming and that he might find grace in the sight of Esau. (Remember from the previous story of Jacob and Esau that Jacob had good reason to fear Esau because he had taken his birthright and his blessing)
And the messengers returned to Jacob and told him that Esau was coming with 400 men, and Jacob was very afraid.. and he made plans to meet Esau, this will be told in another story called "Jacob and Esau Reunite"
So Jacob made the plans and took his two wives and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over a brook called "Jabbok"
And Jacob was left alone, and there he wrestled with a man until the breaking of the day. And when the man saw that he did not overcome Jacob, at the breaking of the day, the man touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh and it became out of joint, and he said 'let me go for the day breaks" And Jacob said "I will not let you go except you bless me" and the man said "What is your name?" and he said "Jacob" and the man said "Your name shall not be called Jacob anymore, but Israel: for as a prince you have power with God and with men, and you have prevailed."
And Jacob asked him "Please tell me your name" and the man said "Why do you ask my name?" and the man blessed him there. And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
And as he passed over Peniel the sun rose upon him, and he limped on his thigh. And so to this day, the children of Israel do not eat the sinews in the hollow of the thigh as memory of the day the man touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh.
