01Gen1601 [LLM0205] Hagar and Ishmael
Genesis 16, Genesis 21
Now Abraham's wife Sarah, had not given him any children, but she had an Egyptian maid named Hagar. And so one day Sarah said to Abraham, "The LORD has prevented me from having children, so I ask you to go to Hagar, and maybe I will have children from her." And so Sarah gave Abraham Hagar to be his wife too. And when Hagar found that she was going to have a baby, she looked down upon Sarah.
And so Sarah treated Hagar very hard, and Hagar ran away from her. And the angel of the LORD found Hagar by a fountain of water in the wilderness, and he said "Hagar, Sarah's maid, where did you come from? and where are you going?" and Hagar told him she was running away from Sarah. But the angel told her to go back and to submit to Sarah, (that means to do as Sarah asked her to). The angel said "You will have a son, and you will name him Ishmael, and he will be a wild man, and every man will be against him." And so Hagar bore Abraham a son, and he was called Ishmael.
And after time passed, Sarah gave birth to a son called Isaac, and as he grew Sarah noticed that Ishmael made fun of Isaac, and so she told Abraham to drive Hagar and Ishmael away. Abraham was very unhappy about that, but God told Abraham that he should do as Sarah wanted him to. And God told Abraham that Ishmael would also make a great nation of people.
And so, early in the morning, Abraham took bread and water and gave them to Hagar, and sent her and Ishmael away, and they wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. And when the water was gone, Hagar put Ishmael under a bush and went away from him, because she did not want to see him die. And she sat and wept.
And God heard Ishmael's voice, and the angel of God called Hagar from heaven, and said "What's wrong Hagar? "Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. Get up, lift up your son and hold him in your hand, for I will make him a great nation. And God showed Hagar a well of water, and she went and filled the bottle with water and gave it to Ishmael to drink. And God was with Ishmael, and he grew and lived in the wilderness, and became an archer. That means he used a bow and arrows. And Hagar took Ishmael a wife from the land of Egypt.
