Job 18: What Is Satan's Real Name?
by Wayne Blank

"Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy Brightness"
The super-loser now known as Satan was created as a righteous winner. He is first recorded in the Holy Scriptures as such by the Hebrew name, pronounced hay-luh-ale, which means Brightness. The name "Lucifer" was a much-later Latin term, meaning light bringer, that was used to translate the actual Hebrew name.
Ironically, matches were (and still are in some places) known as "Lucifers," that is, light bringers (i.e. the common term "Got a light"?) - with (usually) no intention of referring to the Devil. Ironically though, the word "match" originated from an Old French word, meche, that referred to a wick of a candle - the word wick and wicked originated from the same word that meant twisted (see also What Does Wicked Mean?).
"28:13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. 28:14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. 28:15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. 28:16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. 28:17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee." (Ezekiel 28:13-17 KJV)
Hay-luh-ale perverted his freedom to become an arrogant liberal rebel (see Satan's Fall: From Conservative To Liberal) with an evil mouth - and is now known as such. "Satan" is from the Hebrew word, pronounced saw-tawn, which means blasphemer, or accuser (see Satan's Calling).
"14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 14:13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14:14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 14:15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit." (Isaiah 14:12-15 KJV)
The Holy Scriptures do not say that Satan lost his brightness when he became evil. He is still an "angel of light." They do say however that Satan now misuses his brightness to lead people away from the Light, toward the moral darkness of evil behavior and ignorance ("ignorance" means to ignore) of Truth (see the Fact Finder question below).
"11:13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 11:15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works." (2 Corinthians 11:13-15 KJV)
Job's three friends presumed that Job was being attacked by the LORD for doing evil, but the reality was that Job was being attacked by Satan for being righteous. Their correct "Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine" ignored which Light was being focused on Job (see Innocent Until Proven Guilty). They were oblivious that at the heart of Job's "tabernacle" (see What Was In The Heart Of Job's Tabernacle? was a righteous man who was being burned by an evil light.
"18:1 Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,
18:2 How long will it be ere ye make an end of words? mark, and afterwards we will speak. 18:3 Wherefore are we counted as beasts, and reputed vile in your sight? 18:4 He teareth himself in his anger: shall the earth be forsaken for thee? and shall the rock be removed out of his place?
18:5 Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine. 18:6 The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his candle shall be put out with him.
18:7 The steps of his strength shall be straitened, and his own counsel shall cast him down. 18:8 For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he walketh upon a snare. 18:9 The gin shall take him by the heel, and the robber shall prevail against him. 18:10 The snare is laid for him in the ground, and a trap for him in the way. 18:11 Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and shall drive him to his feet. 18:12 His strength shall be hungerbitten, and destruction shall be ready at his side. 18:13 It shall devour the strength of his skin: even the firstborn of death shall devour his strength. 18:14 His confidence shall be rooted out of his tabernacle, and it shall bring him to the king of terrors. 18:15 It shall dwell in his tabernacle, because it is none of his: brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation. 18:16 His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above shall his branch be cut off. 18:17 His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street. 18:18 He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world. 18:19 He shall neither have son nor nephew among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings. 18:20 They that come after him shall be astonied at his day, as they that went before were affrighted. 18:21 Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that knoweth not God." (Job 18:1-21 KJV)
