Q. 51. What is forbidden in the second commandment?

A. The second commandment forbiddeth the worshiping of God by images,[128] or any other way not appointed in his Word.[129]


[128] Deuteronomy 4:15-19. Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the LORD spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire: Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female, The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air, The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth: And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven. (신04:15-19  여호와께서 호렙산 화염 중에서 너희에게 말씀하시던 날에 너희가 아무 형상도 보지 못하였은즉 너희는 깊이 삼가라 두렵건대 스스로 부패하여 자기를 위하여 아무 형상대로든지 우상을 새겨 만들되 남자의 형상이라든지, 여자의 형상이라든지, 땅 위에 있는 아무 짐승의 형상이라든지, 하늘에 나는 아무 새의 형상이라든지, 땅 위에 기는 아무 곤충의 형상이라든지, 땅 아래 물 속에 있는 아무 어족의 형상이라든지 만들까 하노라 또 두렵건대 네가 하늘을 향하여 눈을 들어 일월 성신 하늘 위의 군중 곧 너희 하나님 여호와께서 천하 만민을 위하여 분정하신 것을 보고 미혹하여 그것에 경배하며 섬길까 하노라 

Romans 1:22-23. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. (롬01:22-23 스스로 지혜 있다 하나 우준하게 되어 썩어지지 아니하는 하나님의 영광을 썩어질 사람과 금수와 버러지 형상의 우상으로 바꾸었느니라 

[129] Leviticus 10:1-2. And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not. And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD. (레10:1-2 아론의 아들 나답과 아비후가 각기 향로를 가져다가 여호와의 명하시지 않은 다른 불을 담아 여호와 앞에 분향하였더니 불이 여호와 앞에서 나와 그들을 삼키매 그들이 여호와 앞에서 죽은지라 

Jeremiah 19:4-5. Because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place, and have burned incense in it unto other gods, whom neither they nor their fathers have known, nor the kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents; They have built also the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings unto Baal, which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind: (렘19:4-5 이는 그들이 나를 버리고 이곳을 불결케 하며 이곳에서 자기와 자기 열조와 유다 왕들의 알지 못하던 다른 신들에게 분향하며 무죄한 자의 피로 이곳에 채웠음이며 또 그들이 바알을 위하여 산당을 건축하고 자기 아들들을 바알에게 번제로 불살라 드렸나니 이는 내가 명하거나 말하거나 뜻한 바가 아니니라

 Colossians 2:18-23. Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God. Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, Touch not; taste not; handle not; Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? Which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh. (골02:18-23 누구든지 일부러 겸손함과 천사 숭배함을 인하여 너희 상을 빼앗지 못하게 하라 저가 그 본 것을 의지하여 그 육체의 마음을 좇아 헛되이 과장하고 머리를 붙들지 아니하는지라 온 몸이 머리로 말미암아 마디와 힘줄로 공급함을 얻고 연합하여 하나님이 자라게 하심으로 자라느니 너희가 세상의 초등 학문에서 그리스도와 함께 죽었거든 어찌하여 세상에 사는 것과 같이 의문에 순종하느냐 곧 붙잡지도 말고 맛보지도 말고 만지지도 말라 하는 것이니 (이 모든 것은 쓰는대로 부패에 돌아 가리라) 사람의 명과 가르침을 좇느냐 이런 것들은 자의적 숭배와 겸손과 몸을 괴롭게 하는데 지혜 있는 모양이나 오직 육체 좇는 것을 금하는데는 유익이 조금도 없느니라


문51. 제 이 계명이 금하는 것이 무엇인가 ?

답. 제 이 계명이 금하는 것은 우상으로 하나님을 대신하거나 하나님의 말씀에 정하지 아니한 어떤 다른 방법으로 하는 것이다.

      (1) 우상으로 하나님을 대신하는 것 (신 4:15-19 , 13:6-8 )

      (2) 하나님의 말씀에 정하지 아니한 다른 방법으로 하나님을  섬기는 것 (렘 10:1 , 삼하 6:7 )
