This chapter begins with showing the great and free favour which God had manifested to the Israelites, above what he had done to the Edomites, who are threatened with farther marks of the Divine displeasure; alluding, perhaps, to the calamities which they suffered from Judas Maccabeus and John Hyrcanus, (see 1Macc 5:65, and Joseph. Antiq. xiii. 9,) 1-5. God then reproaches his people, and especially their priests, for their ungrateful returns to his distinguished goodness, 6. They are particularly charged with sacrificing the refuse of beasts, 7-9, for which God threatens to reject them, 10, and choose other nations who will show more reverence to his name and worship, 11-14.

Malachi, from the Hebrew name pronounced mawl-aw-kee, was a prophet of The Lord whose writings are the end of the ordered "Old" Testament (an inaccurate term in regard to many of the "Old" Testament prophecies, including much of Malachi, because many of the events described will not take place until and after Christ returns - it doesn't get more "new" than that; see Which 'Bible' Did Jesus Use?). Malachi was active in the same era as Nehemiah, since parts of their books run parallel in describing how the children and grandchildren were repeating the same mistakes that had caused their parents and grandparents to be sent into Babylonian exile 70 years before. The true Prophets of The Lord provided them with a lesson in Bible History, which included intructions in how to properly worship The Lord.

Ironically, it was also in that time after the return that much of modern-day Judaism was born. In their effort to never again face The Lord's wrath for disobeying Him, they created a large compendium of their own traditions that supposedly enhanced their "obedience" to The Lord. The intent may have been good, but it resulted in a large-scale replacement of The Lord's pure and simple Law with their own traditions - the reason that they later falsely accused The Messiah of being a "sinner," because He perfectly obeyed God's actual Law, including The Ten Commandments, in the Spirit in which they were given, rather than mere man-made traditions that the patriarchs, including Moses, never even heard of (see Did Jesus Break The Law?). It was to those practices of their own device that The Lord said: "1:10 Who is there even among you that would shut the doors for nought? neither do ye kindle fire on mine altar for nought. I have no pleasure in you, saith the LORD of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand" (Malachi 1:10 KJV).

This chapter of Malachi (verses 2-3) is quoted in New Testament teaching i.e. "9:10 And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac; 9:11 For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth; 9:12 It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. 9:13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. 9:14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid. 9:15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. 9:16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy" (Romans 9:10-16 KJV).

"1:1 The burden of the word of the LORD to Israel by Malachi.

1:2 I have loved you, saith the LORD [see YHVH, Adonai, Jehovah, LORD].

Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us?

Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob, 1:3 And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the Dragons of the wilderness.

1:4 Whereas Edom saith, We are impoverished, but we will return and build the desolate places; thus saith the LORD of hosts, They shall build, but I will throw down; and they shall call them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom the LORD hath indignation for ever. 1:5 And your eyes shall see, and ye shall say, The LORD will be magnified from the border of Israel.

1:6 A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name.

And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name?

1:7 Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee?

In that ye say, The table of the LORD is contemptible. 1:8 And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person? saith the LORD of hosts.

1:9 And now, I pray you, beseech God that he will be gracious unto us: this hath been by your means: will he regard your persons? saith the LORD of hosts.

1:10 Who is there even among you that would shut the doors for nought? neither do ye kindle fire on mine altar for nought. I have no pleasure in you, saith the LORD of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand [see also What Law Was "Nailed To The Cross"?]. 1:11 For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the LORD of hosts.

1:12 But ye have profaned it, in that ye say, The table of the LORD is polluted; and the fruit thereof, even his meat, is contemptible.

1:13 Ye said also, Behold, what a weariness is it! and ye have snuffed at it, saith the LORD of hosts; and ye brought that which was torn, and the lame, and the sick; thus ye brought an offering: should I accept this of your hand? saith the LORD. 1:14 But cursed be the deceiver, which hath in his flock a male, and voweth, and sacrificeth unto the Lord a corrupt thing: for I am a great King, saith the LORD of hosts, and my name is dreadful among the heathen." (Malachi 1:1-14 KJV)
